This book brings together information on all aspects of the nutrient requirements of sugar beet. Modern methods of sugar beet cultivation, the statistics of fertilizer usage and current trends in the amounts of each element applied to the crop are considered in the introductory chapter. In the next 6 chapters, N, P and S, K and Na, Ca, Mg and trace elements are discussed separately, with an examination of all aspects of concentration, uptake, deficiency symptoms, residual values in the soil and methods of predicting fertilizer requirements from plant and soil analysis. The value of organic manures is considered and the effects of crop rotations and soil physical conditions are discussed. Time, form and method of fertilizer application are examined, as well as the effect of irrigation, plant density and pests and diseases on fertilizer requirements. Effects of fertilizers on sugar beet quality are reviewed and, lastly, the nutrient requirement of the sugar beet seed crop.
